Growing up our parents took us on many a road trip. As children we had been up and down the east coast many times and had gone on several trips out west. It seems our parents' love for road trips passed along to each of us. Now that we are parents, we too are passing along a love for hitting the open road to our children. (Otherwise known as forced family fun.) I guess a sense of adventure started even long before our parents started traveling with us. Our mom's mom, MomMom, immigrated from Austria to America back in the 50's. Talk about an adventure! As a family we began discussing the idea of a trip around 2015/2016. Summer of 2018 was decided as the time to do it. All the grandchildren, our children, were at an age they would remember the trip and would still enjoy going with family. The oldest, Caleb, is 14 and quickly reaching the age of "it's not cool to be seen with family". The youngest is 5. It's been a whirlwind of planning. Will, family patriarch, is retired and has served as primary travel planner. Look for a future blog on how he organized everything for the trip. Johanna, my sister, is super resourceful and the queen of finding deals. She's found all sorts of freebies for the kids. Look for a future blog on how she find deals and whatnots. The total road trip length varies for each family. Johanna, our mom (the other Johanna) and crew are leaving from Pennsylvania and traversing across the northern states. Myself, along with my boys and my dad will depart North Carolina and make our way north westerly to Billings, Montana. My brother, Larry and his family will fly into Keystone, SD along with Johanna's husband, Ed. They'll join the leg from Keystone to Las Vegas and then fly home. The rest of the group will continue to California. Myself and my boys will then leave the group to head due east back to North Carolina. Johanna, our parents, and her children have a few more destinations before they make their way back to Pennsylvania. Our road trips have never been without mishap: breakdowns, vehicle fires, stolen vehicles, and hitchhiking all seem to be a natural part of road trips for us. I have resigned myself to the fact that this trip will be certainly be a knockoff Griswold Style Family Vacation road trip from hell.
